In a recent release Transportation Trades Department AFL-CIO (TTD), of which TCU is a member, President Larry I. Willis, issues this statement in response to a deal reached between Congress and Trump to re-open the government for three weeks:
“While we are pleased 800,000 federal workers and their families will get a temporary reprieve from this nightmare, shuttering the government for 34 days never should have happened in the first place.
“Aviation delays seen this morning not only prove the importance of a functioning government, but echo warning signals transportation unions have been issuing for weeks: without a fully funded federal government, this country and its economy cannot function.
“We cannot allow our government to go unfunded again. The fact that our nation’s federal workforce continues to face uncertainty is unacceptable.
“Preventing another government shutdown starts with understanding the important functions federal workers play. For too long, some have demonized America’s federal workforce, and that must end now. Federal employees are dedicated public servants who, as this shutdown has shown us, regularly put the interests of this nation ahead of their own. Marginalizing the critical work they do only jeopardizes our nation’s safety, security, and economic vitality.”
