April 4th marks the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in Memphis. The sanitation workers were trying to form a union with AFSCME. Dr. King stood beside them because he knew the right to bargain collectively is every American’s right. He gave his life for the freedom to bargain, to vote, to afford a college education and justice for all workers, immigrant and native-born. Today, that message needs to be shouted even louder! All that he stood for on that day is being challenged and made a mockery.
Many events are planned all across the U.S. for the “WE ARE ONE” event sponsored by the AFL-CIO. TCU President Bob Scardelletti has asked each Local Chairman to pass the word and encourage all TCU members to participate in a nearby event.
President Scardelletti said in his letter, “Americans are under attack. There are quite a few well-funded, right-wing corporate politicians trying to take away our rights and those benefits, which we worked so hard to attain. To this end, your help is desperately needed. Events are being planned in every state beginning on April 1 and continuing throughout the entire week. I am appealing to all TCU members to help make our voices heard.”
Please go to the AFL-CIO website wvvw.we-r-1.org where you can find out what your state council is planning and any local action that is taking place in your area. This site will provide you with all the information you need to attend an event or plan an event of your own.
A thank you goes out to all TCU members already planning to attend many of these events. Please continue to send in any event that you as a TCU member will attend send pictures as well. All events will be posted here as they come in. You can give this information directly to your Local Chairman or e-mail it directly to TCU at websteward@tcunion.org.
