TCU President Bob Scardelletti has weighed in on pending Senate energy legislation, cosponsored by Sens. John Kerry and Joe Lieberman.
In a letter to the two Senate sponsors of the American Power Act, President Scardelletti criticized the bill’s aggressive timetable for shutting down coal plants. “This aggressive policy will have severe negative consequences for the Railroad industry and our members,” writes Scardelletti. “One in five railroad jobs relies on the transportation of coal.”
“Our Union believes new energy and environmental legislation needs to recognize and protect railroads – the most fuel-efficient way to haul goods and people.” The letter concludes by asking the Senators to reconsider the coal-related provisions as the legislative process moves forward.
