Here we go again. Republican Congressional conservatives have declared war on Amtrak and commuter railroads.
The proposed legislation would eliminate funding for Amtrak subsidies, a move that would reduce funding by $1.6 billion. It also would eliminate intercity and high-speed rail grants, $2.5 billion annually, and it would strike the subsidy for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, $150 million annually.
This funding keeps hard working union families on the job and the loss of this funding will have a long lasting effect on Amtrak and commuter railroad employees.
“I continue to say that Your Vote Counts! No industry is so dependent on the government for support and funding as Amtrak and commuter rail. Every person we elect at every level of government can potentially have a big impact on our jobs,” said TCU President Bob Scardelletti. “TCU will oppose these cuts and work diligently to keep our members on-the-job.”
This proposal by the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC) shows how bitter the coming fight over funding will be.
