As of May 21st, bus (and truck) drivers must have their USDOT physicals performed by a medical examiner who is listed on the new National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. This change will also affect school bus drivers who are required by their state to obtain medical certification.
Current medical certificates held by CDL holders will continue to be valid until the expiration date shown on their card. When their card is due to expire, drivers can visit FMCSA’s website to search the Registry for certified medical examiners nearest their location. FMCSA will accept medical certificates as valid only if they are issued by medical examiners listed on the Registry.
This change stems from FMCSA’s 2012 final rule that established the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners and required that all medical examiners who conduct physical exams for interstate CMV drivers, to complete training and pass a test to verify they understand federal safety regulations. It also requires that drivers have their physical performed by a certified medical examiner listed on the Registry.”
